MEGHALAYA
Meghalaya, the abode of the clouds, is a cool, pine-fresh contrast to the Brahmaputra valley. Eastern and central Meghalaya are manly populated by the closely related Jaintia and Khasi people, originally migrants from Southeast Asia. Western Meghalaya is home to the unrelated Garo trib. Despite their different ethnic backgrounds, these two groups both use a matrilineal system of inheritance, with children taking their mother’s family name. the Khasi script was introduced by Welsh missionaries and churches exist at remote areas which were probably chosen for their resemblance to the Welsh countryside! From 1874 until 1972, Shillong was the capital of British Assam. This sprawling hill station still retains elements of charm and the air is refreshingly cool. The lew Duh market (Bara Bazaar) bustles with activity with an unbelievable range of village products on sale. Another landmark is the imposing All Saints Cathedral. Siat Khnam, a unique archery lottery held every afternoon is a fascinating display of traditional marksmanship.
Best time to visit: Meghalaya has a pleasant climate throughout the year. It is best to avoid travelling during the Monsoon season between May to October as it is considered to be the wettest region in the country. The most favorable time to visit Meghalaya is between November and February.
