MAJULI
Considered the largest inhabited river island in the world, Majuli is slowly shrinking. The monasteries (satras), landscape and the simplicity and innocence of the people have mesmerized visitors to this tranquil paradise. The monks lead a simple but rigid rural life with worship based on prayers, chants, plays and dance. Visiting a Mising village with their unique bamboo and wood houses on stilts is another option for the traveller. Pottery in Majuli is an important heritage though the potter’s wheel has not found its way till date. Pots are made by hand from beaten clay and burnt in driftwood-fired kilns. The masks of Majuli depicting characters of Indian mythology are made of clay, bamboo and cloth. These masks are used in various folk performances.
Best time to visit: July to March is the ideal time to visit Majuli during late autumn or early winter and spring as it gets too hot during summer. The best time to visit Majuli is during the Raas festival of Lord Krishna which is held in November during the full.
